Get to know Bucky Martin
Bucky Martin is a graduate of Lexington School District One. He began his music journey in 1983 when he joined the band as a trumpet player at Oak Grove Elementary School. His directors included Henry Wilson, Charlie Polk, Linda Larsen, Michael Santiago, and Robert Smith. He went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Winthrop University (2001), where he studied under Trumpeter - Dr. Ian Pearson, Symphonic Director - Dr. Bill Malambri, Jazz Director - Dr. Phil Thompson, and Jazz/Pep Band Director Dr. L.H. Dickert. He received a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration from Appalachian State University (2005). He played trumpet in the Winthrop University Symphonic Band, he played lead in the Winthrop University Jazz Ensemble where they opened for multiple artists including Glenn Miller Orchestra, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Trumpeter Marvin Stamm, Drummer Ed Soph, and Bassist Rufus Reid. He played lead for the Winthrop University Pep Band where they played in many Big South Championships and NCAA Basketball Tournaments. After graduation, he became the Band Director at Lake View High School in Dillon County (SC). Under his direction the band advanced each year at the Lower State Championships and placed in the top 10 in the Class A State Championships. His bands also received a rating of Excellent at Concert Festival for performance and sight-reading. He has played locally performing for weddings, funerals, and many VFW functions. He was the Principle Trumpet for the Francis Marion University Wind Ensemble and is currently with the Lexington Community Band. He enjoys spending his free time with his fiance' Lisa and their family.
