The Importance of Music

Music is part of everyone’s life whether they realize it or not. That jingle from a certain car commercial that’s been stuck in your head all day? Music. The sound of rain washing away the filth of a busy street? Music. A newborn baby’s cry? Music. That new band you heard on the radio? Obviously, music.

Music is something we all enjoy and can relate to. That’s why as students it is important to keep learning even after we are relaxed and ready for summer vacation. We need to keep our minds active in order to keep those muscles we worked so hard to train engaged. Practice is an excellent way to do that. When we practice, our brain tells our muscles the movements to do in order to create sounds. Those sounds therefore can be translated into music.

When we practice, we work towards a common goal; to create music. Practicing in the summer may not be the most enticing idea, but in order to move forwards as musicians it is necessary. Once you learned the ABC’s, you had to keep repeating it over and over in order to memorize it. With practicing, you have to keep repeating over and over again until you learn the correct fingerings, intonation, or the right way to phrase a passage. One great way to stay motivated to practice is by taking lessons.

Whether it be busier or more flexible, in the summertime our schedules change. Remembering to schedule lessons in is an important aspect of the summer. Working with your teacher to work out a summer lessons plan is very beneficial. Is there a certain song that you really want to finish learning before fall? Just let your teacher know and they can help you get to where you need to be.  Keeping up with those lessons will not only give you a weekly goal, but a long term one like getting further along with your instrument.

Keeping up with lessons will help you as a musician stay active and engaged in the music. Music is all around us and as musicians, we want to contribute to the music of the world in the best possible way that we can. In order to do that, we must realize that there is a lot of practice to be done in order to get to where we want to be. We can always learn more and we will keep on learning and getting better as time goes on.
