About Aekyung Kim

Aekyung Kim received her Bachelor’s degree at the Juilliard School and is a member of the Hartford Symphony. She currently studies with Cynthia Phelps, the principal violist of the NY Philharmonic, and is finishing up her Master's degree in viola performance at the Juilliard School. She is passionate about teaching and developing the young, promising minds of children. Her passion is driven by her strong belief that children are the future of music - an essential and powerful force that brings people together exercises compassion and enriches the lives and minds of our community. As a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and a certified Suzuki Teacher, Ms. Kim specializes in teaching the violin and viola to beginner students. Although Ms. Kim has experience in using a traditional teaching method with students of all ages, she has discovered the solidity and effectiveness of using the Suzuki Method.

Ms. Kim began her teaching career 8 years ago, giving private lessons to students from her local elementary and middle schools. She also has experience in mentoring highly advanced students in the Juilliard Pre-College division. One of the special traits Ms. Kim can offer as a teacher is her wisdom and vast experience in the performance field.

Ms. Kim has received further performance education at the highly prestigious Tanglewood Summer Music Festival for three consecutive summers. Some of the most memorable and musically fulfilling moments that she’s received through Tanglewood include performing in a chamber orchestra alongside Yo-Yo Ma in the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors and gaining the chance to play in the Boston Symphony Orchestra viola section.

Ms. Kim has 12 years of violin performance experience acquired through her earlier years of playing. During this time, she won several competitions, gaining solo performance opportunities at Carnegie Weill Hall, Tilles Center, and Kennedy Center.

Outside of her passion for music, Ms. Kim loves animals, especially her cat Thumbelina, and volunteers walking dogs at the animal shelter. She enjoys other hobbies such as painting, weight lifting, yoga, and hiking.
