About Allen

As a music teacher, I seek to share the joy that I have found in music!

The instruments that I teach are wonderful vehicles for a life long journey of learning, self-discovery, and self-improvement. This unique perspective can affect every aspect of oneself, in positive, enlightening, and self-affirming ways

I love to teach through a process of self-discovery, inspiration, and competent guidance.

This method completes the question-and-answer cycle that is essential to all education.

It is also the bedrock for communication through music. This approach gives the student the why and how of what they are trying to learn. It is the mutual progress through this process that serves to fuel and inspire me as well.

I have been on a journey of musical discovery for all of my professional life. Like any well-seasoned traveler, I delight in sharing the path and guiding the experience!

I have been teaching for thirty-five years, with seven of those being in the schools teaching grades K-12.  I have also spent two years as an administrator, so I am truly aware of what band directors face on a daily basis.  My students have had a 90% success rate at meeting or exceeding student-stated goals.  I also have a 98% average retention rate!

As a private instructor, I have been teaching with Music & Arts for ten years, so I am well-versed in the diversification of private lesson instruction.

"Serious study...wicked good fun."

Now retired from government employ, I have enjoyed being a career musician with a number of bands.  I am an independent, freelance musician and teacher in Portland, ME as well.  Over the years, I have also been a part of a number of musical organizations, including:

  • American Federation of Musicians Union Boston Local 9-535
  • The National Theater Musicians Association
  • The Boston Musicians Association
  • The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing arts.
  • The National Association of Pastoral and Liturgical Musicians
  • The National Association of  Military Musicians
