About Mandie Furrow
My name is Mandie and I am proud to be a Voice and Piano teacher at Music and Arts!
Let me tell you a little about myself. Currently, I am finishing my last semester at SIUe for Master's in Music Performace and Vocal Pedagogy. People often ask: What is Pedagogy? This is the study of teaching practices. In terms of "Vocal Pedagogy", this means I have spent years learning the biology of the voice and the pyschology behind of what makes up great performers, as well as been apart of extensive mentorship from seasoned voice teachers who have guided and critiqued my lessons.
How did I get to the brink of one of the greatest acheivements of my life? It all started in a coastal town in Virginia. From the time I could hold a mircrophone, my parents always had me singing to the congregation on Sundays. When I was old enough to get my lisence, I drove to the next town to try my hand at acting and singing on stage, and I fell in love performing. When it came time to go to college, I knew I wanted to major in music. I moved out west to Illinois to attend Greenville College (University) where I received a B.S. in Contemporary Music. During my time there, I spent alot of time touring with a choir all over the counrty, writing songs for different musical groups, recording music, and being apart of one of the campus' rock bands.
My voice teacher always pushed me to do more with my music, particularly to become involved in classical music, something I had little knowledge and interest in. She set me up with an audition for a young artist singing program in Italy and, to my surprise, when I auditioned, I got in! I traveled to Italy to sing multiple rolls, including rolls in Le nozze di Figaro. It was difficult keeping up with so many singers who had been training to be opera stars for years, however, I fell in love.
When I came back to the U.S., I applied for grad school at SIUe to explore this new passion as well as to learn how to teach it. By the next year, I had performed 6 full operas and classic musicals, including two in France.
