Mandy Swaim is an avid performer and teacher of flute currently residing in Tampa, Florida. With a strong passion for collaborative performance, Mandy has participated in cross disciplinary performances in the arts and founded various chamber ensembles . These chamber ensembles include: Iridis Quintet (wind quintet), The Elm Street Duo (flute and horn), Euphorbia Duo (flute and clarinet), and V3N Trio (www.v3ntrio.com). Participation in these ensembles has led to commissioning projects, unique performance opportunities, and continued inspiration in collaboration. Her collaborative experiences have led to international performance opportunities in Italy, Austria, and Czech Republic.
A strong enthusiasm for flute instruction has led Mandy to form and maintain a private flute studio in both the Greensboro and Tampa Bay areas alongside serving as instructor of flute at Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City, Florida. This passion has sparked particular interest in researching pedagogical and instructional techniques used in assisting the developing flutist. She provides instruction to a wide spectrum of students aging from pre-kindergarten to early college students, as well as enthusiastic adult amateurs. Her instruction includes general music, beginning keyboard skills, flute, and piccolo. In addition to maintaining an active flute studio, she has taught numerous masterclasses to school-aged students in Florida and North Carolina. Mandy has successfully assisted a number of students in preparation for festival competitions at the county, district, and state levels as well as preparing students for undergraduate college auditions.
Dr. Swaim completed a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of North Carolina Greensboro where her studies focused on flute performance with an emphasis in early flute pedagogy. She holds a Master of Music degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from University of South Florida. Her primary instructors have included Dr. Kim McCormick, Dr. Deborah Egekvist, Dr. Carla Copeland-Burns, and Dr. Erika Boysen.
