About Ben Young

Ben Young is a talented and knowledgeable guitarist, educator, composer and multi-instrumentalist who performs and gives lessons regularly, all over the DC area.  Originally from DC, he graduated Cum Laude from the Berklee College of Music in Boston with a Bachelor of Music, and shortly thereafter released his first EP of original music for a jazz quintet, “Ruminations.”  After returning to his hometown, he began teaching private lessons on guitar, as well as piano, bass and ukulele, and performing regularly, not only in and around DC, but also Baltimore and New York.  He has played music spanning a wide variety of genres at venues including: Blues Alley, Jojo, Twin’s Jazz, The Black Cat, Takoma Station,  the Delancey (NYC), Pearl Street Warehouse, Donna’s (Baltimore), the Middle East (Boston), and Columbia Station, as well as performing for private events both solo and with an ensemble.  Some notable artists Ben has collaborated with are the Soul Searchers (the continuation of Chuck Brown’s first band), Terry Marshall, the Ben Young Trio, Kaleidoscope, Donald Tillery, Rarely Mellow Blues, Jess & Ben and Free Lobster Buffet.  He has taught students of all skill levels, from ages 6-65, both in individual and group settings.  His teaching approach is tailored to each student's unique tastes, interests and musical goals, but usually it involves a blend of instrumental technique, ear-training, sight reading and music theory, balanced to fit that particular student.  The best motivation comes from students hearing themselves successfully playing the music they like to listen to, so music of the students’ own choosing forms the backbone of the instruction and other important fundamental skills (technique, reading, theory, ear-training, etc.) are linked to and structured around that.  Whatever the student’s musical interests, tastes and abilities may be, Ben Young can provide insightful support and guidance in helping them achieve their goals.
