About Bernadette

Meet Bernadette Bascom, the award-winning performer, who has the kind of career most singers dream about. She has shared the spotlight with music legends like Elton John, Ashford and Simpson and Stevie Wonder and taught such notable singers as Sanjaya from American Idol. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Bernadette knows all about giving back. It started early with her father, the first African-American Fire Department Commissioner in the city (and later a popular pastor), and a loving mother who dedicated nearly four decades of teaching inside the Baltimore School District - Bascom knows how important her parents were. "Compassionate," she describes. "Dad always took care of the neighborhood, Mom always took care of the kids." They were the solid foundation that helped her launch her career - singing with the huge stars she did, like longtime friend Stevie Wonder, working Las Vegas and Los Angeles for years before eventually calling Seattle home. "I came here in August," she said. "You all know about that - nobody told me about the rain! The music though, that's what kept me here.

"But Bascom's greatest achievement isn't the heights she's soared - but the wings she's given others.
"I've met so many talented people," said Bascom. "I know how it feels to use your gift, and I'm just honored to have a gift."
Bernadette developed a program at Skyview Junior High School, leading the Northshore Music Project. It's a big hit - a special learning experience for all of her students. "It takes teamwork, confidence, self-esteem just don't know what gift people have by looking at them," she says. Bernadette feels music has no boundaries, and she gives every student a chance to shine.

Still performing outside of school and teaching, Bernadette knows where her heart lies, where the rhythm lives. Teaching students the art of performing, engaging, singing, expressing and embracing is her goal whether they are young beginners or advanced adults.
