About Emily Koons
I have performed on the piano extensively and continuously since childhood; have played Classical and jazz piano; and have taught piano, music history, and music theory since graduate school. I take great pleasure in seeing my students develop their own interests and styles of playing, leading to a lifetime of piano enjoyment.
My teaching style andn program delivers a comprehensive music program including development of technique and repertoire, sight singing, sight reading, theory and ear training, improvisation, and composition. This enables students to pursue their own individual interests and abilities. Students from young children through adults benefit musically from my instruction in music. Teaching experiences include work with early childhood with Kodaly, Orff, and Music Learning Theory methodologies. A small percentage of my students have continued to professional careers.
I have pursued extensive undergraduate and graduate studies in piano and organ performance, music education, choral conducting, music literacy, and reading instruction.
I am an Associate with the American Guild of Organists, with extensive study of pipe organ with Dr. Dale Krider in College Park, MD.
Currently I am a certified music teacher in Maryland with Prince Georges County schools, and am the vocal and general music specialist, director of school chorus and recorder ensemble, Honors Chorus staff, piano festival judge and instrumental festival staff.
I have served as the church organist, director of adult and children's choirs, director of handbells and recorder ensembles at churches of various denominations in the area.
A have been a teacher of private and group piano lessons for over 40 years, including home and studio, conservatory, and boys choir keyboard training.
