About G Allen

A lifelong Richmonder, Allen is a highly versatile musician whose performing
career began as a house musician at the Tides Inn in 1979. Educated at Virginia
Commonwealth University, he has been involved in both professional and community
groups on clarinet, saxophone and flute. You may have seen him playing saxophone
with pop groups like Spectrum, or jazz groups like Jack Diamond & Friends,
Swing Shift Jazz Combo, and the Continentals. Even local backup for national
names like The Four Tops and Archie Bell. ‘Legit’ clarinet credits include the
Richmond Pops Band, Commonwealth Winds, and the Richmond Clarinet Choir, as well
as some freelance with the Richmond Symphony/Virginia Opera during college days.
Other clarinet activities include klezmer and gypsy music with My Son the
Doctor, German ‘oompah’ music with Elbe Musikanten, and even a little
country/western with The Cactus Kings. Jazz involvements on clarinet include A
Pack of Luckies, Men of Mystery, Gypsy Roots, Rumble Seat Revival, and the RVA
Dixieland All-Stars. Allen has extensive experience as a woodwind doubler in pit
orchestras for Virginia Repertory Theatre, Lee Playhouse, Cadence Theatre
Company, etc. In 1999 he toured the US and Europe with the company of Blackbirds
of Broadway. Allen has been teaching privately for roughly 22 years, including
19 years at our Midlothian Location, and 9 years at Mechanicsville Music. He is
in his second year at our Regency location, and serves as woodwind clinician at
Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Hanover County. Allen is also in his eighth
year as music director at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Henrico County, near his
home. In his spare time he enjoys amateur radio (c/s N4JRI) and jazz guitar.
