About Jerry C.
All levels: beginners and up. (high schools students preparing for auditions: repertoire, improvisation development, theory entrance exams) plus college students.
Comfortable teaching different styles (jazz, classical, blues, rock, folk, pop) emphasis on jazz harmony and applied fingerstyle & picking techniques.
As students begin to find their own rhythm, a teacher needs to be aware of that
individuality and help cultivate an understanding of the importance of building a strong musical foundation and forming a personal relationship with the instrument, cultivating a fearlessness to explore its possibilities. I enjoy the flexibility to adapt lessons to a student’s needs and strengths. My teaching incorporates horizontal and vertical organization of theoretical principles on the guitar fretboard, building a foundation for memorization, reading, improvisation, song writing, and technique for whatever style a student is interested in.
Students are introduced to listening to classic historical recordings in a style (Jazz, Blues, Rock, etc.), and are encouraged and guided to transcribing music (suited to their level) to develop the ear for inspiration, and also to learn how great players use the materials studied, to cultivate their ideas and develop technical skills on the instrument.
