About Me

I fell in love with classical music while watching Leonard Bernstein conduct the NY Philharmonic as a young boy.In 1979 I graduated from Eastern Nazarene College with a BA in Trumpet Performance and Psychology. For the past 40 plus years I have taught music to children and adults in school and church settings, and at a performing arts center. I currently volunteer teach children how to play orchestra instruments before family concerts with the NC Symphony.

I began teaching trumpet privately 43 years ago. Over the years I have added voice, piano, ukulele, trombone, french horn, euphonium, and recorder to my studio. I convey to each student that working at your craft for 10,000 hours will make you an expert. My students are encouraged to enter competitions, and play publicly as often as they can. I am always looking to bring on new students of all ages.

My foundational methods include Leonard, Krueger, Clarke, Arban, Reinhardt, Rizzetto, Pearson, and Rubank. Solo and ensemble repertoire is introduced at the appropriate time. Time is also spent on improvisational techniques.

I use Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory to help inform me of the students learning style. My goal is to nurture each students deep musical process. Students are encouraged to own their process from day 1. I support whatever pace students choose to employ, and tailor my instruction to their needs and wants.
