Karl has a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH. A Philadelphia native, Karl began playing the saxophone at age 8 and picked up the oboe at age 13. He has participated in many music ensembles during his time at The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts including All-city band, orchestra, and jazz band, PMEA District and Region Band and Orchestra, and Philadelphia Young Artist Orchestra. In college, Karl participated in many student organizations including Music Ambassadors, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and the Student Jazz Association in addition to ensembles. He has also earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He studied under Jason Omara and David Bixler on saxophone and Jacqueline Leclair and Nermis Mieses on oboe. Karl has participated in master classes with Terrell Stafford, Bootsie Barnes, McCoy Tyner, Dick Oats, Nancy King, Steve Wilson, and John Sampen.
