About Kenneth

Hi! My name is Ken Lightfoot and I have been teaching for over 20 years. I can’t believe it’s been that long...time definitely FLIES when you are having fun! : ) From the moment I started teaching I knew it was my calling. I enjoy being able to help my students discover the world of music and the enjoyment that comes from playing an instrument.
My musical journey began at a very young age. My first instrument was cello in 3rd grade and I picked up the trombone in 5th. I continued with both instruments through high school and into college. Cello was always my main instrument and was my major in college. Along the way I started playing with a band that I am still with today after 25 years! I have also performed in other bands, orchestras and chamber groups.
I started my teaching career in the public school system where I taught elementary and middle school strings as well as band. This is where I honed my skills on the violin and viola. When I left the public school system I focused on giving private lessons and over time I was hired by private schools.
I believe very strongly that being able to connect with a student is just as important as what you are teaching and that it helps to build a positive learning environment. I work with my students to help them build a strong skill foundation and the knowledge they need to be musically successful. Besides working on developing their technique, I encourage students to bring music from their school that they may need help with as well as any music they would like to learn for their own enjoyment. Learning an instrument is definitely work, but it is just as important that they learn to also have fun! : )
