Matthew Kay is a tireless student, always seeking great teachers and always seeking to expand his already formidable abilities. He has studied and performed professionally solo classical guitar, jazz, and funk for years, attending guitar lessons with such noted teachers as Jean Marc Belkadi (Musicians Institute, instructor to Maroon 5s James Valentine, Dweezil Zappa, and Gavin Rosdale), Rusty Cooley (Guitar World, Extreme Pentatonics), and Karl Sanders. He was born in South Carolina to a family of educators. He developed an interest in arts early on, winning awards in writing and working with South Carolina Childrens Theatre and Greenville Little Theatre Childrens Program. One of the earliest things I can remember is hearing Bad from Michael Jackson in the car on the way to school and I remember long trips listening to funk and Motown, unless my Mom was driving, then it was country. He began playing guitar after hearing Led Zeppelin and began studying jazz years later, inspired by Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. He began The Hustle as a jazz fusion group and later as a funk group. He attended USC Upstates Commercial Music ProgramÊbefore becoming a father to his son, Isaiah, now 5, and his daughter, Ada, 6. He currently performs solo, with his funk band The Hustle, as well as with Springfield Baptist Church Choir. Learn more at Matthew Kays YouTube channel.
