Educational Sales Rep
Michael Atkinson has been playing the saxophone for 53 years. His musical journey started in the fifth grade as a beginning saxophone student in the Windham, Maine school system. Throughout secondary school he studied saxophone with Tony Ingerowski and Joe Laflamme. Being engaged musically through private study and a desire to perform, Michael achieved first chair status in all district and all state festivals throughout secondary school. During his junior year in high school, Michael was also chosen for the McDonalds All American Band and the Phil Wilson All Star Jazz Band at the Berklee College of Music’s high school jazz festival.
Michael attended the University of Southern Maine majoring in music education for three years studying saxophone with Burchard Tainter and Marion Brown. He also studied flute with Francis Drinker. Michael then attended the Berklee College of Music as an applied saxophone major studying jazz saxophone with Andy McGhee in the professional diploma program.
Being a classically trained saxophonist, Michael’s attention to detail and musical interpretation is exceptional. Without the discipline and technique he gained from classical training, he would not enjoy the success he does, in the styles he loves. Upon leaving Berklee, Michael went on the road as a working musician for several years playing throughout the United States and Canada. Over the years Michael has played with a number of local bands; The Terry White Big Band, Blue Max, Vehicle, The Washington Brothers, Superstuff, Mark Miller, Arlo West, Band On Edge, Denny Breau and Dirty McCurdy. Currently Michael is playing with The Carmine Terracciano Band !!
Michael has been with Music and Arts for a total of 10 years; 3 as an educational sales rep and 7 in retail sales. Prior to Music and Arts, Michael was a millwork sales rep for 20 + years.
