About Michael

Michael Shingo Crawford began playing violin at age seven. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Emory University, where he studied with Shawn Pagliarini, and is currently doing his master’s in music composition at Temple University. Michael was concertmaster of the Emory University Symphony Orchestra during his senior year, and was the winner of the 2015-2016 Concerto and Aria Competition, with his performance of the Barber Violin Concerto. During his fourth year, he presented a senior violin recital as well as an honors composition recital, where his music was performed by the Vega String Quartet, Elena Cholakova, and Emory’s student and alumni musicians. He has performed orchestral and chamber music at the Kennedy Center and Kimmel Center. In his free time, he arranges and records popular music for strings.

As a teacher, Michael emphasizes efficient, goal-oriented practice, and provides a strong technical foundation while always keeping musicality and expression in mind. He encourages students to develop problem solving skills that will ultimately allow them to create their own interpretations about a piece of music.
