About Michael Shingo Crawford

Michael Shingo Crawford is a Philadelphia-based composer and violinist who explores narrative and extramusical ideas through sound. His work is inspired by literature, visual art, dance, and his Japanese heritage.

He holds a Master’s in Music Composition from Temple University, and his music has been performed by ensembles including the PRISM Quartet, Vega String Quartet, Sound Energy Trio, and Philadelphia Orchestra Musicians.

As an active violinist, Michael performs regularly with ENAensemble in addition to freelancing. During his undergraduate studies at Emory University, he served as concertmaster of the Emory University Symphony Orchestra and was the winner of the 2015-2016 Concerto Competition with his performance of the Barber Violin Concerto.

As a teacher, Michael emphasizes efficient, goal-oriented practice, and provides a strong technical foundation while always keeping musicality and expression in mind. He encourages students to develop problem solving skills that will ultimately allow them to create their own interpretations about a piece of music.
