About Nelson Johns
Originally from Indianapolis, Nelson Johns began guitar lessons at age 7. In grade school he also took piano lessons, sang in the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and played in many school ensembles while continuing to practice guitar and play in bands outside of school. In high school he had the opportunity to play guitar in his school jazz ensemble and decided to pursue a college degree in jazz studies. He recieved a scholarship to study jazz/contemporary guitar at Capital University Conservatory in Columbus, OH, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2013. In 2014 he began the Master’s program in Jazz Studies at North Carolina Central University in Durham. While studying under the direction of guitarist Baron Tymas, Nelson regularly performed with the school’s top jazz ensembles while simultaneously establishing a career as a working guitarist and educator in the Raleigh/Durham area. He also had the opportunity to study with Branford Marsalis during his time at NCCU. After graduating in 2016 with his Master of Music in Jazz Studies, Nelson received the 2017 Durham Arts Council Emerging Artist Award for Music. He currently performs with the Durham-based Afro-Brazilian band Batuque, and as a jazz duo with vocalist Anna Rose Beck.
In addition to his love for jazz music, Nelson also has experience playing rock, pop, hip hop, R&B, Afro-Latin styles, and classical. He has worked with children and adult students of varying skill levels, from total beginners to audition prep for students now enrolled in music programs at UNC School of the Arts and North Carolina Central University. Nelson currently resides in Durham. In addition to playing music, Nelson enjoys cooking, riding his bike, and spending time with family, friends, and his cat Clementine.
