About Rhianna

Rhianna Cockrell, mezzo-soprano has accomplished a promising start to her young career; her most notable engagements to date include an appearance with American Lyric Theater in their ALT Alumni Concert, an engagement with Opera Saratoga as a Studio Artist for the summer of 2018, an invitation to join Minnesota Opera in their collaboration with University of Minnesota through their selective ECCO Program, as well as a run of Thaïs with Minnesota Opera as a member of the chorus. Rhianna has had both professional and academic success as a performer of opera, oratorio, and choral repertoire. As a recipient of both the Berneking and Palmer fellowships with the University of Minnesota, she has performed various roles through their Opera Theater, including Idamante in Idomeneo, Zita in Gianni Schicci, Bianca in Rape of Lucretia, and La Badessa in Suor Angelica, a show for which she also covered the role of La PrincipessaOther notable roles include L’Enfant in L’Enfant et les sortilèges with the George Mason University Opera Theater, as well as Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri as a young artist with the Italian program La Musica Lirica. Additionally, Rhianna was a finalist in the Minneapolis-based Schubert Club’s 2017 Scholarship Competition. Rhianna was recently engaged as a soloist in multiple performances of Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle under the baton of Kathy Saltzman Romey with the University of Minnesota Chamber Singers. During her time in Minneapolis, Rhianna has also performed as a soloist in Bach’s Magnificat and Cantata 21 with the choir at Church of St. Patrick of Edina, as well as participating in a concert series with the professional ensemble, The Gregorian Singers.  Prior to her time in the twin cities, Rhianna had been engaged as a soloist in such oratorio repertoire as Händel’s Messiah, Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Durufle’s Requiem, and Mozart’s Requiem

As well as being a performer, Rhianna is an avid teacher of voice and piano. Rhianna instructed voice privately as well as taught group classes in musical theater, jazz, and classical style at French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in the summers of 2013 and 2014. She has also taught voice and piano privately with Music and Arts in Germantown, Maryland, and currently teaches through the International School of Music in Bethesda, as well as Music and Arts in Laurel, Maryland. 


A native of Compton, Virginia, Rhianna holds degrees from George Mason University and the University of Minnesota.
