About ROBERT

Originally from San Antonio, TX and a percussionist at heart, Robert grew up thick in the “band tradition” of Texas. He started playing percussion in 6th grade. Robert received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (B.M.E.) from Baylor University in 1998 under the education guidance of Prof. Michael Haithcock, Director of Bands, and Dr. Larry Vanlandingham, Director of Percussion.
After living in Texas for most of his life, 1998 brought him to the wonderful state of Virginia. In 2004, Robert moved to Loudoun County, VA and started teaching in the Sterling MS /Park View HS cluster. After teaching there for five years, he continued teaching middle school band in the Brambleton area for another six years. In 2012, Robert completed his Master’s degree in Music
Education (M.M.E.) from The University of Michigan. He recently transitioned after teaching 12 years public schools in Virginia to pursue his doctorate in Music Education (Ed.D.) at Teachers College, Columbia University in the City of New York. Currently, Robert's research focuses on the psychological state of flow in relation to experienced middle school and high school band directors. Robert's performance practices are centered around technological appropriate uses of creating creative spaces for celestial music making.

Some of Robert's favorite styles of music and bands include: The Sun Ra Arkestra, Third Stream Jazz, Folk-tronica, David Crowder, The Digital Age, Ozomatli, Ben Harper, The Hudson Horror Project and any music where a Moog synthesizer is used. In his spare time, Robert absolutely LOVES spending time cooking Tex-Mex with his wife, Rachel, and taking their beagles, Penelope and Bartok, to the dog park as much as possible!
