About Sarah

Sarah Hughes graduated with a bachelor's degree in instrumental music education from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2008 and with a master's degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory in 2015.  She started teaching in 2006 while at UMD, giving private lesson in saxophone, clarinet, and flute at Acoustic Axis in Alexandria, VA.  While there she also taught Music for Young Children classes for 3 - 5 year old children.

After graduating, Sarah directed elementary band and string programs at 3 public schools in Prince George's County from 2008-2013.  During that time Sarah started a private studio at Music and Arts Center in Bowie, MD and also traveled to student's homes in Alexandria, VA.  The majority of her students were started and guided by her for at least their first 3 years.  Sarah thoroughly enjoys the process of starting students on their musical journeys.

While in Boston, Sarah maintained a private studio with Musika.  She also was faculty at the 2016 Judith Lappel Summer Woodwind Camp in Fairfax, VA.  While there she gave a workshop in improvisation techniques. Currently she teaches at Music and Arts Center in Laurel on Thursdays and Greenbelt on Sundays.
