Welcome to Music & Arts Ellicott City!

Take the Virtual Tour of our store!

Home of Howard County's Band and Orchestra Pro Shop, Music & Arts in Ellicott City is one of the company's oldest and largest stores. You can find our store conveniently located in the Chatham Station Shopping Center on Baltimore National Pike.

Our store is passionately dedicated to keeping music alive in our society through providing lessons, rentals, repairs, and everything else you’ll need to be successful in your musical journey!

Lessons are what build the foundation and basis for musicians as they strive to excel in their instrument and, here at Music and Arts, they are held in the utmost importance. We are honored to be able to offer solid, structured, and creative instruction to our lesson students. Because the relationship between a teacher and a student is imperative, we believe that having the perfect instructor for your student is critical. For this reason, we pride ourselves in having the most devoted, passionate, and best qualified teachers in the area to teach your growing musician. Our brilliant instructors include locally recommended names such as Greg Thompkins, Amanda Holmes, Tom Puwalski, John Blount, Tedd Griepentrog, Dave Lavorgna, and many more! All of our teachers are able to work with any level of performance whether the student has just started playing or if they have been playing for many years. A list of our teachers can be found on our store’s home page for your review but, if you’d like, please give us a call and ask us about more information on our wonderful instructors!

The Music and Arts store in Ellicott City is also the most convenient place to rent your instrument while learning to play. We offer name brand, teacher approved rentals for all instruments including Yamaha, Jupiter, Bach, Gemeinhardt, Bundy, Strobel, Glaesel, Selmer, Buffet, and many more! We can rent you a brand new instrument for the same price as a used one and offer a flexible and affordable damage coverage plan to cover the cost of repairs while you rent. Our rental plan is completely 100% rent to own which means all of the money you are putting towards your instrument as you rent is going towards the purchase of the instrument. You also have countless exchange options while renting with us with no additional fees or costs.

Our store has recently been upgraded into a pro-shop and now carries an extended supply of intermediate and professional instruments, reeds, accessories, and other products! Our line of professional quality instruments now include names such as Shilke, Muramatsu, Trevor James, Selmer Paris, Yamaha Custom-Level Instruments, P. Mauriat, Haynes, and more. We are the most expedient location to try out multiple instruments and have in-store experts ready to assist you with your questions and concerns in deciding on a new instrument. We guarantee lowest price on all our instruments or accessories and will beat the price of ANY certified dealer on same brand/model instruments. Feel free to come in and take a look at our new available stock!

The first Music & Arts was located in a small house in Bethesda, MD and run by founder Benjamin O’Brien. When Music & Arts opened its doors in 1952, we offered printed music, music lessons, dance lessons, and art supplies. Ben decided shortly after opening his business that he wanted to focus on music to better serve his customers – a decision that remains intact to this day.

Since the 1990s, Music & Arts has expanded nationwide through organic growth and a series of acquisitions and mergers with other music dealers. In 2005, Music & Arts joined forces with American Music, a division of Guitar Center, to become the largest band and orchestra instrument retailer in the United States.

Still run by the O’Brien family, Music & Arts now comprises close to 500 retail and affiliate locations and over 100 educational representatives nationwide. Now based in Frederick, MD, the company of trained musicians offers friendly service and everything musical for students, parents, and educators, including instruments, lessons, music books and accessories, rentals and repairs.

Music & Arts is designed to provide the most comprehensive offerings for student musicians and music educators. Our goal is to create the best possible multichannel experience for our customers. As a result of this, Music & Arts has earned notoriety as:

  1. The nation’s largest lesson provider, with over 1.25 Million private lessons taught each year
  2. The largest provider of instrument rentals, with more than 200,000 instruments rented annually
  3. The largest school music dealer, serving more than 5000 schools nationwide
  4. The largest fleet of outbound salespeople, with over 100 educational representatives visiting schools
  5. The largest provider of B&O repair services, with more than 75 repair shops in service across the country

Our Vision: To excite people about playing music, teaching music, and supporting musicians and their passion for music

Our Mission: To be the music retailer of choice for student musicians and music educators
