About Susan

Welcome to Music & Arts!  I teach flute at both the Lakewood and Puyallup Music & Arts locations.  I have been teaching and playing the flute in this area for over 20 years.  I graduated from Stadium High School and was involved in both the Tacoma and Seattle Youth Symphony organizations throughout my school years.  I went on to study flute at the University of Puget Sound and the University of Washington.  During my college years, I was a member of the Tacoma Symphony, played as an extra for the Seattle Symphony, was principal flute of the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Contemporary Group Woodwind Quintet.  I studied flute with Scott Goff (Seattle Symphony), Felix Skowronek (Soni Ventorum Wind Quintet), and Murray Panitz (Principal Flute Philadelphia Orchestra/Curtis Institute).  I have performed in masterclasses for the principal flutes of the New York Philharmonic (Julius Baker), Chicago Symphony (Donald Peck), and Boston Symphony (Doriot Anthony Dwyer). I have also studied flute pedagogy with award-winning KinderFlute creator, Kathi Blocki.  I am currently finishing up my KinderFlute certification and will be starting my first KinderFlute class this year.

I also studied voice with Dr. Tim Mussard (UCLA) and the leading baritone of the Metropolitan Opera, Frank Guarrera.  After two years of study, I won the regional San Francisco Opera Competition and represented the Northwest in the finals at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco.  I have also worked as a free-lance singer and was the vocal soloist at many area churches.

I utilize both my flute and vocal training in my lessons.  I recognize that each student has different playing abilities and goals and try to personalize my lessons for each student.  Sometimes, I have to get very creative!  In my studio, students will be given the opportunity to participate in yearly recitals, open-mic events at Music & Arts, community performances, and flute choir (with an opportunity to play alto and bass flutes).  I am currently branching out into world flutes, studying the Native American flute and Chinese Dizi flute and will be introducing students to other world cultures through their flutes and flute music.

Music has always been a big part of my life, and I am excited to share my love of music with the next generation.
