You must play for the love of music. Perfect technique is not as important as making music from the heart. -- Mstislav Rostropovich

About Me

I am Yuri and as the store manager of our brand new Wayne location, I'd like to invite you to come in and say hello!

I've been with Music & Arts since May of 2012, and have been with the Paramus team until November 2013, when I started managing the brand new Millburn store. From there, I ran and managed the Express Rental Center in Wayne for a couple months, and am now managing our newest New Jersey location next to ShopRite right on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne!

I am new to this area and would love to get to know the community while fulfilling your musical needs. In the meantime, here’s a little about me.

My musical life started where I grew up, in Latvia. I took piano lessons at a fairly young age for just a few years before crossing the Atlantic and discovering a new opportunity. When I was offered to play a string instrument in 4th grade, I picked up the viola and played for a few years into high school. Then I started to play the French horn in addition to the viola, and played in the concert band, wind ensemble, brass quintet, and with the Fort Lee Bridgemen marching band (being Captain of the Mellophone section), as well as orchestra, briefly singing with the choir and picking up the trumpet for a jazz band concert.

I began to respect and understand music, and thus started studying with a private instructor and playing in a more serious musical group – the Bergen Youth Orchestras. I understood the importance of private instruction and a commitment to exercise this art. With music you can express yourself in ways which are impossible through another medium, and the better of a musician you are, the better you can express yourself. And what’s life if not for self-expression?

My high school music experience was followed by my undergraduate study of Music and Music Education at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), from which I graduated in 2010. I studied and played the French horn for about 15 years now, and can help anyone pick out their first student horn or their first professional French horn model. I also know much about the regular maintenance of your instrument as well as emergency quick fixes. Ask me about accessories for home practice or if you want to try a new mouthpiece!

Having gone through the Music Education track in college, I learned to play and teach all the woodwind, brass, strings and percussion instruments, as well as piano and voice. In college I also started to explore the art of music a little more and joined the student-run Contemporary Music Ensemble. My interest in electronics and minimalism continues to grow.

During my four years at TCNJ, I worked at the Music department doing stage setups and recording performances, ranging from full orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz and big bands, smaller chamber groups, and solo performers. That got me interested in music production and other behind-the-scenes acts, which I'm also slowly starting to explore as I build a home studio. In college I started fiddling around with an electric guitar and picked up an electric bass several years later. My musical interest keeps growing, and while time seems to be speeding up, time is all there is - and ever will be.

My wish is to continue playing the music I love and through education and self-expression share it with my family and close friends, complete strangers, and everyone in between.

So give me a call or just come in, and let me get you what you need to start making beautiful music.
