My students and I set long-term and short-term goals, then work together to develop foundational skill sets that will allow us to get to those goals faster and easier. Most importantly, I find ways to encourage and support my students as they grow."

Get to know Alexis Houchin

Alexis Houchin is an outgoing, persistent piccolo-focused player with an innate knowledge of how to work the piccolo and flute in both performance and educational settings. She is passionate about what she does and looks forward to changing the world of piccolo repertoire and performance through her work. In performing some of these difficult and challenging solo piccolo repertoire pieces, she is described as having a love for the piccolo that can be felt across the hall. Pieces performed include Lowell Liebermann's Concerto for Piccolo, Avner Dorman’s Concerto for Piccolo, and John McDonald’s Sonatina. In addition, she performed as a solo artist with the Tucson Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, playing Henri Kling’s “The Elephant and the Fly”. With these pieces, she placed in the top 3 in the Undergraduate division of the Arizona Flute Society Competition. Aside from soloist performances, she has a broad amount of experience in a variety of ensembles including Piccolo in the University of Arizona (UA) Wind Ensemble, Piccolo in the Arizona Symphony Orchestra, Piccolo in the UA Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal Flute/Piccolo in the UA Wind Symphony, Piccolo/Flute/Alto Flute in UA Flutefinity, and Flute in a UA Undergraduate Wind Quintet.

Outside of her personal musical performances, she has a desire and love for teaching young musicians. She has experience as a Flute Instructor at one of the top high school bands in Southern Arizona, Rincon/University High School, where she assists as a visual/music tech for the competitive marching band and offers technique classes year-round. In addition, she provides private lessons to all beginning to intermediate flute/piccolo players.

She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance at the University of Arizona, under Dr. Brian Luce, where she is focusing her studies on piccolo. From there, she plans to continue her piccolo/flute studies through a master's degree and play in orchestras around the world.
