Get to know Austin Coley
Coming from a musical family, I would frequently hear the sounds of singing and strumming, with the occasional bass, drums, cello (you name it!) every once in a while. This love was nurtured by my many excellent friends and teachers including Eric Hofbauer, Adam Levin, John Dennewitz, and Jaime Sherwood. In May 2018 I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a secondary in Jazz Guitar. Currently (as of Fall 2020), I am attending the Hartt School of Music, where I am pursuing my graduate degree in music education. I have participated in ensembles large and small, under the leadership of Mark Berney, Mark Conley, and Dave Zinno, taking invaluable lessons from each. I wish to continue teaching music classes, playing to larger audiences, and composing music that speaks to listeners as well as myself. My personal teaching philosophy is to present students with real-world hands-on performing experience, which generates excitement about music from the start of their journey. I put a strong emphasis on technique, but also value the students' contributions in the form of improvisation and spending time on the musical elements that most interest them.
