Brendan Ryan
Brendan Ryan
Music Teacher, Professional
Location: Orchard Park, NY
Speaks: English
Instructs: Drums
Education: After finishing my student teaching semester this spring (Spring 2021) I will have completed my Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a concentration in Percussion from SUNY Fredonia.
Performance Experience: I have been performing in the WNY area for 5 years with my band Cheap Peach and have also performed with orchestral groups in WNY such as the Buffalo Civic Orchestra. During my time at Fredonia I performed with the percussion ensemble, wind ensemble, African drumming ensemble, and the College Symphony Orchestra as the timpanist. Along with the multitude of ensemble experience, I was also part of the 1st place ensemble group for the Education Africa International Marimba competition.
Teaching Experience: SUNY Fredonia's Music Education program has given me a wide breadth and depth of teaching experiences, pedagogies, and methodologies for students at the elementary, middle, and high school level; as well as experiences teaching adult percussion courses. I have done multiple observations in districts such silver creek, fredonia, and hamburg aiding in student lessons and rehearsal techniques.
Teaching Philosophy: I take a very eclectic and constructivist approach, building upon my students prior knowledge and skills to correlate new musical and physical ideas to already understood material. Music, and drumming especially, is like a puzzle and I like to slowly build upon basic ideas so that more complex pieces can more easily fall into place in a gratifying way. More over I want students to enjoy themselves so I use multiple method books to creatively aid in the specific needs of my students.

Get to know Brendan Ryan

Hello my name is Brendan Ryan and I am currently completing my Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a concentration in Percussion at SUNY Fredonia. I have been playing percussion and drum set for 14 years and have worked with fantastic percussionist such as Dr. Kay Stonefelt, Dr. John Bacon, Dr. Tiffany Nicely, and took many years of lessons with Jerry Augustyniak (the drummer of the 10,000 Maniacs). I have also been a gigging drummer playing and recording punk music with my band Cheap Peach for around 5 years; and wish to bring all this experience in an eclectic manner to lessons, in whatever way the needs of my students dictate.  I have had a litany of experience teaching and working with students of all ages and can help with a diverse set of percussive skills such as: refining snare "chops" for playing in school ensembles, the basics of rock drumming, or even developing skills with world percussion rhythms on the drum set and the intricacies of jazz drumming. Most importantly I want my students to feel comfortable behind the drum set and provide a fun and enriching musical experience, just as I have had through my journey with the art of drumming/percussion!
