Teaching Philosophy: I am particularly drawn to the “Socratic Method.” Socrates developed this method of teaching through the process of asking questions. By studying the “Socratic Method”, I discovered a way to make my teaching style, very interactive. As a teacher of music, my aim is to be less of a lecturer and more of a road map. I strive to allow my students to absorb what I can offer from my own education and experience, while expressing and developing their own ideas.

Get to know Calvin Evans Jr.

Calvin Duane Evans Jr. is an honors graduate of Hampton University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Master’s Degree in Teaching. During his time at Hampton University, Calvin sharpened his compositional skills as a member of  The Hampton University Concert Band, Hampton University Saxophone Section, and Hampton Roads Flute Choir. Upon graduation, he established himself  as a highly proficient composer for Visual Media, Symphonic Band, Small Ensemble, and Jazz Band.  

Calvin is currently pursuing a Master’s in Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in Film Music Composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. He has composed original music for multiple student films and television pitch ideas. Outside of his school work, he has composed jazz ensemble literature for the Alamance County Jazz Band and film-like scores for Decode Detroit Escape Rooms.

When Calvin is not composing music, he teaches private music lessons as the Woodwind Specialist Instructor at Music & Arts. He also performs in the Alamance Jazz Band as the Baritone Saxophone chair and has performed in the pit orchestra for local musicals.  After completing his master’s program at UNC School Of The Arts , Calvin will enroll in a Doctorate in Music Composition program at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, while teaching music on a collegiate level. He plans to compose for multiple visual and musical projects and share his gift with the world.
