Performance Experience: Lots of freelancing with area big bands and small groups, musical theater pit orchestras, playing wedding ceremonies and TAPS at military funerals. He even spent a whole summer as a musician at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH.
Teaching Experience: Carl has taught privately over the years to many students and given masterclasses to various high schools and middle schools. He has sixteen years experience as a music educator.
Teaching Philosophy: I believe in building solid fundamentals and helping students become expressive performers. I enjoy working with beginners and watching them reach their goals. Most importantly I want them to have fun and enjoy music.

Get to know Carl Nelson

Originally from Detroit, MI, Carl was a jazz studies major at Wayne State University.  While there he studied with a number of professional players and became comfortable with classical and jazz music, dixieland and rhythm and blues.  In St. Louis he continued to freelance with various groups and pit orchestras including New Line Theater, Kirkwood Theater Guild, Alpha Players and many others.  He has been a featured soloist with the Northwinds Concert band and was a member of the Rhythm Imperials horn section for years (Motown and R&B music).  Carl went on to earn his Master of Arts in Teaching and currently is a music educator in the Parkway School District.
