      Chris Spence
      Music Teacher, Master
      Location: Columbia, SC
      Speaks: English
      Instructs: Guitar
      Education: Board Certified Music Therapist
Teaching Experience: Since 2007, I have taught private guitar lessons, general music and group guitar and piano courses in K-12 classrooms, guitar classes for non-majors at the undergraduate level, undergraduate remedial tutoring courses, lead and co-lead middle school and high school youth group bands, and I provided clinical music therapy supervision to 13 undergraduate music therapy students through experiential learning opportunities in community settings.
Teaching Philosophy: I believe all people can meaningfully engage with music. Playing the guitar can express values, produce empathy, mindfully connect you with yourself, create a space of safety, engage multiple neurological functions at once, and bring groups of people together. Learning the guitar requires patience and endurance. These two skills can serve students to be more mindful of beauty and resilient to change. In order to bring these positive changes to the world, one must first learn the C major chord.

The drum set was where I developed my passion for music. In the 8th grade, I started playing the guitar which continues to be my primary instrument today. I completed a degree in music composition at Georgia Southern University in 2013. I heard that music can be used as a tool to help people and discovered music therapy. I finished a master's degree in music therapy at Appalachian State University in 2018. As a music therapist, I focused on preserving communication in older adults with neurocognitive disorders, symptom management for adults with cancer, and family support and meaning-making for people in hospice care.

While playing the guitar you can develop your understanding of your identity, root yourself more deeply in it, and participate in life with a greater sense of vigor and authenticity. Learning the guitar is an opportunity to engage with and develop your creativity, mental fortitude, and create meaning in your life. My areas of expertise include composition, Logic Pro X, and guitar. Other activities that bring me a sense of vitality include pottery-making, birding, collecting baseball cards, and making skincare products and soap.
