Get to know Cynthia Fleming

Cynthia Fleming has been one of Philadelphia’s leading woodwind performers and teachers for the many decades since her first student soloist performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Her primary instruments are oboe and english horn, but she is adept at flute, piano, clarinet, sax  and recorder. She has studied with the masters of the double reed and piano, and as a teacher has succeeded in bringing their insights into phrasing, interpreting and just enjoying the great music of history. She has played with groups as diverse as the Israel Sinfonietta, Relache—the Ensemble for New Music, Concerto Soloists, and most of the areas orchestras and chamber groups. Her playing has taken her from coast to coast, playing events from the  Aspen Music Festival to the Philadelphia Folk Festival. For many years, Cynthia was the founder and primary instructor of her own music studio in Chestnut Hill, teaching students from the age of 5 to 75. She has also taught in the music department at Chestnut Hill College and Springside Academy. While her strengths as a teacher are foundational classical technique, she tailors each lesson to the interests of the student, happily working with them on more popular repertoire as well. Some of her students have gone on to careers in music, but all have a deepened appreciation and love of music. The Chestnut Hill Local has called her an “Inspirational, gifted musical performer and teacher.”
