Get to know Dorothy Chung
Since her first violin lesson at age ten, Dorothy has had an ongoing passion for playing the instrument. With more than 8 years of private teaching experience, Dorothy is delighted to engage your goal of beginning a musical journey, preparing towards a college major/minor in music, or exploring and returning to music in one’s adult life. As a teacher, she believes music is a great vehicle for students to develop self expression, self discipline, and community.
At age 18, Dorothy was a guest soloist at the 2014 Salem Philharmonic Orchestra’s winter concert series, where she performed Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole. In her younger years, Dorothy was a member of the Massachusetts All-State orchestra as well as the Northeastern Senior Districts orchestra for which she was principal violin II for several years. Dorothy graduated summa cum laude from Gordon College with a B.M. in Music Performance and a B.A. in Accounting and Business Administration. Dorothy further pursued a Master of Music degree in violin performance at Ohio University, where she attended on a full ride graduate assistantship and was a violinist in the graduate Klinder String Quartet. During her time at Ohio University, she frequently performed with the Klinder Quartet and the Ohio Valley Symphony orchestra, taught Upper Strings Methods and Applied Violin at the university, and was a violin instructor at the Athens Community Music School.
Dorothy is also a CPA in Maryland, and in her free time she enjoys writing string arrangements, improvising on the violin, duetting with her violinist husband, and playing the piano.
