Performance Experience: Principal Bassoon of the Baton Rouge Symphony 2013 Season Performed with Opera Project Columbus, Tuscarawas Philharmonic, McConnell Arts Chamber Orchestra, Westerville Symphony, Symphony of Southeast Texas, and the Brazosport Symphony. Attended Summer Festivals such as the Texas Music Festival, Orchestral Institute Napa Valley, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, and the Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival.
Teaching Experience: Adjunct Professor of Bassoon at Marietta College (Fall 2019-Spring 2020) The Ohio State University (3 years experience as teacher of the Bassoon Methods Course) Fort Bend ISD, Texas (5 years experience as a private lesson teacher)
Teaching Philosophy: My teaching philosophy encompasses utilizing different strategies such as breaking down skill sets, modeling, and singing in order to meet the student at their skill level and help them attain proficiency at the bassoon. I develop personalized lesson plans to establish a pedagogical curriculum that includes fundamentals, etudes, and solo works for each student.
Get to know Erik Malmer
Erik Malmer is an educator and bassoonist located in Columbus, Ohio. Originally from Houston Texas, Erik Malmer began playing the bassoon at the age of 12. As an educator he has taught bassoonists of all ages and skill levels having taught at Marrieta College, the Ohio State University, and five years as a private lesson bassoon instructor at Fort Bend ISD schools in Sugar Land, Texas. As an orchestral musician, he served a one-year position as principal bassoon of the Baton Rouge Symphony and has also performed with Opera Project Columbus, the McConnell Arts Chamber Orchestra, Symphony of Southeast Texas and the Brazosport Symphony. Mr. Malmer has also attended numerous summer music festivals including the Texas Music Festival, Orchestral Institute Napa Valley, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, and the Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Bassoon Performance from the Ohio State University with Karen Pierson. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance from the University of Houston under the tutelage of Elise Wagner.
