About Jay Brown
Music Teacher, Master
Location: McLean, VA
Instructs: Banjo, Bass Guitar, Guitar, Ukulele
Education: Although I don't have a music degree. I have studied rigorously music and music theory over a long period of time and continue to study, learn and hone my musical skills and work to be the best music instructor I can be.
Performance Experience: I have been performing professionally for well over 35 years. I have led many groups as guitarist/ vocalist and also worked as a sideman on guitar and bass in numerous bands. I also have extensive experience as a solo performer in the folk and blue realm and also as a solo jazz guitarist.
Teaching Experience: I have been with Music & Arts for over twenty years and over fifteen years as a full-time instructor.
Teaching Philosophy: I strongly encourage any student new/intermediate level, to read musical notation. I began as a self-taught ear player but needed the depth and understanding that comes with the ability to read and master difficult pieces of music. Reading really is a must! For those who don't want to read music, I have developed what I call the mechanics of music and guitar. It's a college level immersion into how it all works and how to master the fretboard and learn to make beautiful and meaningful music.
Get to know Jay Brown
I, Jay Brown grew up in Northern Va. and in 2005 wife Melinda purchased a home in Rehoboth Beach Delaware and currently split time between Rehoboth and Chevy Chase, Md. in the DC area. I primarily teach guitar and electric bass but also ukulele. Styles of music played and taught range from acoustic folk, delta blues, country, classical, R&B, electric blues and jazz. Having performed all the styles above for over 35 years, I have expertise in all these areas. However, I would consider jazz as my most advanced area of expertise.
