Henry Turner is an Atlanta-based guitarist and singer/songwriter who believes music to be a source of great meaning, expression, and healing. As a music educator, he has the goal of helping people of all backgrounds realize their potential as players and as human beings. Above all, Henry believes that music is something that should be fun and additive in one's life One of his chief goals as a teacher is to give students the skills needed to learn/explore independently. Guitar and vocal performance are Henry's strengths, as well as playing electric bass, mandolin and ukulele as secondary instruments.
Henry was born in Pensacola Florida, and grew up in Northwest Georgia, where, in his youth, he gained an appreciation for rock and roll, blues, bluegrass, country music, and gospel. While attending Georgia State University in 1989-90, he had the privilege of studying classical guitar under John Sutherland and jazz guitar under Rick Burgess. This experience left him with a strong interest in music education. While attending the School of American Music at the University of North Florida, Henry studied under instructors such as Jack Petersen, Bunky Green, Bill Prince, and Harry Pickens. It is from these teachers that he received a firm footing in harmony and pedagogy.
Upon graduation, Henry moved to the Atlanta area to perform as sideman with several regional acts in the Southeast, supporting national acts such as Santana, Jeff Beck, Government Mule, The Wood Brothers, and The Black Crowes, and most notably, Col. Bruce Hampton. He was a member of The Urban Shakedancers, The Tinsley Ellis Band, and was bandleader with his own project, Lowmelt. Henry currently performs regionally both as solo artist, and in group settings. He also works in the field of pro audio as a repair technician. He was mentored, as employee, by Dill Beckman and Randall Aiken. Henry enjoys spending time with his family, backpacking, and fishing.
