Get to know Isaiah Thomas
Isaiah started learning the violin at the age of 9. He has previously studied under Mr. Paul Jenkins at Music and Arts in Hanover,MD, as well as Ms. Alexandra “Sasha” Mikhlin as part of the inaugural class of students of the Annapolis Symphony Academy. For his Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, Isaiah primarily studied under the instruction of Dr. Jeffrey Howard for violin lessons and performed in the Towson University Symphonic Orchestra under the baton of Dr. Christopher Cicconi at Towson University. As part of his studies in chamber music, he has also studied under Dr. Emmanuel Borowski and Dr. Joseph Gotoff on the viola as his secondary instrument. Finally, part of Isaiah’s studies included a course on string instrumental pedagogy, studying various methods such as the Suzuki method, as well as the methods of Mimi Zweig of Indiana University.
Isaiah had been the concertmaster of the Meade High School Orchestra from his sophomore year through graduation. During high school, he was the principal 2nd violin of the 2016 Anne Arundel All-County Orchestra under Sandra Dackow, the concertmaster of the 2017 AACPS All-County Orchestra under Dr. Harlan D. Parker, and a 1st violin section violinist of the 2018 AACPS All-County Orchestra under Brian Balmages. Isaiah also had been accepted to play as a first violin section member in the 2018 AACPS Side-by-Side concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Since then, Isaiah has been a part of the first violin section of Towson University’s Symphonic Orchestra since the semester of Fall 2019. During his studies, he has substituted as a violinist for fellow Towson University graduate Gabrielle S. Satterthwaite for a musical production of “Beauty and the Beast” at the St. Paul’s Schools in Timonium, performed works for numerous composition studio colleagues, among several other services.
Isaiah additionally has experience with other musical instruments throughout his musical career. He took two years of private lessons on the piano. He also learned the flute in elementary school, then moving on to marching band at Meade High School from 2016-2018 and the Towson University Marching Band during the 2019, 2021, and 2022 seasons, also learning piccolo in the process.
Isaiah will continue higher level education at Towson University with a Master of Music in Violin Performance.
