About Jack Yearwood
Get to know Jack Yearwood
Jack Yearwood is a cross-disciplinary artist and educator currently based in Severna Park. They have been exploring the technologies of poetry and sound manipulation in process-centric ways, often putting equal emphasis on the development of their work as its “completed” form. They aim to explore the collapse betwixt the English language and music, and capture fractals of that happening for shared pondering with their listeners/readers.
From a young age Jack was always attracted to language and learning, and was a voracious reader who first became interested in music after being scared by the outro to “A Day In the Life.” This persistent interest nagged at Jack long enough to convince them to study at The New School, where under the tutelage of poets Angela Carr and Wendy Xu and musicians Darius Jones and Wendy Eisenberg, they were able to hone their craft and artistic vision.
Both Jack’s poetics and music have an undercurrent of silliness cutting through them which manifests itself in the former through word warping, syllabic shenanigans, and a meticulous attention to spatiality; and the latter through angular sounds, dissonance, and off-kilter rhythmic profiles. They often use improvisation as a means of exploring sound/word potentialities, re-evaluating those coalescences in a listening environment to determine whether or not they can be salvaged and birthed into something.
This lifelong venture into sound exploration has recently expanded past Telecasters and Super Sonics and into electronics and the distorting of sound via the dense assortment of possibilities found within DAWs such as Logic Pro X and Ableton Live. Jack is working towards a unification of these analog and digital worlds to create a unique and vast soundscape for their poetics to exist and blossom within.
In a few months, Jack is terribly excited to perform their first few shows centered around a new poetics / sound intersection with multi-instrumentalist Sam Hickman. They also encourage you to check out and support their work with the Brooklyn-based punk / noise rock band Aggressive Squirrels, available via https://aggressivesquirrels.bandcamp.com/album/as and most streaming platforms
