Teaching Philosophy: I tend to emphasize fun over everything else, especially when you are just starting out. As you start to understand more about the instrument, I like to emphasize improvisational techniques as well as performance ability.

Get to know Jake Routzahn

Jake Routzahn is a versatile musician with almost a decade of experience playing the guitar. He is 21 years old and currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at Shepherd University. He has experience playing in a multitude of ensembles and bands, some of which include: The Shepherd University Big Band, The SU Jazztet, The SU Classical Guitar Ensemble, and Portland Head Light. He is fluent in a variety of styles, including rock, jazz, classical, soul, and funk. His approach to teaching is emphasizing fun and exploration, and catering to what the student would like to get out of the experience. Improvisation and ability to perform confidently in front of an audience are among some of the main things he believes his students should be proficient in, and he is able to provide the tools necessary to do so.
