Education: Jay has studied piano privately since 2011. They spent five years as a voice major at Georgia Southern University, where they learned pedagogy and teaching techniques, as well as what it takes to be a proficient, knowledgeable musician and performer.
Performance Experience: Jay has been singing as a professional church musician since 2017 and currently holding a position as a staff singer at Christ Church Episcopal in Savannah, Georgia. They have been a substitute musician in several churches around central Georgia, where they play piano and organ.
Jay’s opera debut was in Georgia Southern’s 2018 production of Don Giovanni, and they have since appeared in various productions with Georgia Southern Opera, Moon River Opera (Savannah, GA), and Music On Site, Inc.
Teaching Experience: Private music instructor since 2017. Taught in central GA, Statesboro and Savannah, and now here in Augusta. Jay has experience teaching piano and voice, as well as acting as a coach/accompanist for soloists.
Teaching Philosophy: If something is worth you learning how to do it, then it is worth learning to do it well. I provide students with a strong foundation and understanding of techniques and theory, and a “toolbox” of practical skills to help with individual practice and problem-solving along the way. I believe in teaching my students to be able to learn and grow outside of their lessons, and I want them to be able to learn and grow to the point that they may not “need” me anymore.
Get to know Jay Jones
Jay Jones has been a private lessons teacher since 2017, and they are happy to have found a place with the Music and Arts team! Jay originally hails from Cochran, Georgia, where they started taking piano lessons over ten years ago. They studied voice for five years at Georgia Southern University, continuing their piano studies privately. Jay’s teaching has followed them all over the state, having had students in central Georgia, the Savannah area, and now here in Augusta. With a background in performance, Jay has been seen and heard in productions from the Southeast to the Midwestern United States, and they continue to be active as a church musician and soloist.
