Performance Experience: As a band leader and sideman I have performed on bass guitar, upright bass, piano, and acoustic guitar. I have performed in many varied settings from string quartets and orchestras to big band, bluegrass, and rock groups. I currently do freelance jazz work in Asheville as well as perform with my main projects, a southern rock/jam band called Big Fur, and a fusion trio called Elefante!.
Teaching Experience: I have a combined 4 years of experience in private instruction on multiple instruments. After high school I briefly worked as a bass guitar teacher at Springfield Highschool outside of Philadelphia, and during college I supported myself by opening my private studio to students of all skill levels. In Miami I taught students aged 8-50 on piano, guitar, and bass guitar.
Teaching Philosophy: I believe that teaching music means much more than teaching another to play an instrument. Instrument skills are an important part of being a musician, but learning music involves so many other vital skills. Being sensitive to and listening to the world around you, understanding not only what you are saying but how you are saying it, and understanding how to express yourself effectively are all skills that make up musicianship.

Hello! My name is Joseph Marino and I am a multi-instrumentalist originally from the Philadelphia area. I have been performing music professionally since the age of 16, participating in the thriving music scenes of Philadelphia, Miami, and now Asheville. At the age of 18 I moved to South Florida to attend the University of Miami studying Jazz Bass. Although I have long been a student of Jazz music, I passionately believe in a holistic approach to music. I continue to study and perform not only in the Jazz idiom, but in classical, folk, and popular styles of music as well. Sharing my love of music through teaching is very important to me and I am excited to be joining the team at Music & Arts.
