Get to know Joseph Smith
In the fall of 2018, Joseph started his journey at Mississippi Valley State University. He joined the university choir directed by Dr. John Weiss and had vocal lessons under the studio of Dr. Kimberly Broadwater. He later enrolled in vocal lessons with Dr. Shelly Garlotte and joined the Valley Singers in 2019 under the direction of Dr. Brandon Cash. He held the positions of Mr. Choir, Tenor Section Leader, Student Conductor, and Social Media Manager for the choirs at Mississippi Valley State University.
His artist journey began with the release of his debut single, "Superman," in 2020. He wrote his first official Song in a college dorm in 2019 with a friend. With the publication of The Song, which has achieved well over 20,000 streams across numerous streaming services, a brand-new chapter in life began. Since the single's release, he has put out a number of songs, including "Decisions" and "Picture Perfect," both of which have racked up a sizable amount of streams. On the HBCU McDonald's Gospel Celebration tour, his rendition of "Go Tell it on the mountain" helped the Mississippi Valley State University Choir win $75K. Jo has performed/open up for many well-known artists, including Keke Wyatt, Smokie Norful, Donald Lawrence, Kierra Sheard-Kelly, Samoht, and Jekayln Carr. He has also performed as a background singer for artists like Anthony Hamilton.
After graduating, He taught his own Voice and Piano Studio and is currently the Director of Choral Activities at Stockbridge High School.
