Teaching Philosophy: My teaching practices are informed by the interdisciplinary approach to my research and teaching interests. These practices aim to address the rounded development of every student by cultivating knowledge, values, and skills. Therefore in my classes, we discover, unlock and expose meaningful connections between the topics we study and the rest of the areas of knowledge.

Get to know Juan Gallastegui Roca

Juan Gallastegui is the Music Director of the Rockville Concert Band (Rockville, MD) and Music Director of the Prince William Youth Orchestra (Woodbridge, VA). In September 2020, he has been appointed as Music Director & Conductor of the D.C. Strings Orchestra culminating from a close collaboration that began in 2018 as a guest conductor. The appointment comes after a successful Concert Opener of the DC Strings 5th Season in the Balcony Series at Harbour Square. Since 2016, Gallastegui has established a reputation throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area as a conductor and educator and he is in demand to work with community groups, semi-professional orchestras, and youth groups. He has conducted the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra (Ashburn, VA) and the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington D.C. An accomplished euphonium player, Gallastegui played in different wind bands in Spain (e.g. Castro Urdiales Municipal Band, Llodio Wind Band, La Pamplonesa Wind Band) for more than twenty years before moving to the United States where he began to study conducting. Gallastegui holds a Ph.D. in Music History (University of La Rioja), a Master in Music in Orchestral Conducting (Bard College, NY) and a Master in Education (University of Cantabria). Previously, he earned a B.A. in Musicology (University of La Rioja, Spain) and a double B.M in Tuba Performance and Pedagogy of Tuba (Navarre Conservatory). Among other awards, Dr. Gallastegui was a "Rafael Del Pino Foundation" Scholarship Recipient in 2014. His main conducting teacher and mentor was the late Harold Farberman. Other teachers include Jorma Panula, Lawrence Golan, Mark Gibson, and Leon Botstein in conducting, and Dr. Laurence Wallach and Dr. Kyle Blaha in composition.
