      Get to know Julian Drumwright

Julian is a jazz drummer based in Boston known for his exquisite time-keeping and feel, musical sensitivity, and light touch. He went professional at the age of 17, playing regular gigs with some of Washington DC’s hardest hitting jazz artists. At Berklee College of Music, he has studied drum set with jazz legend Ralph Peterson and Jon Hazilla (author of Mastering the Art of the Brushes), as well as classical snare drum with Thomas Schmidt. He is one of only twenty students to receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend Berklee’s prestigious Master of Music in Global Jazz program in 2023.

Julian has quickly become one of the more in-demand drummers on Berklee’s jazz scene. He has played on countless student projects in recording studios and recital halls; led a recital of his own arrangements and an original composition for jazz sextet; played in jazz, pop, and Balkan folk ensembles; performed alongside Berklee professors, including in performances with the world-renowned pianist Luis Perdomo; and is a founding member of the New Jazz Orchestra (NJO), a professional, twenty-piece big band that highlights the works of jazz composers in and around the school.

Julian’s most profound drumming influences include Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey, Ari Hoenig, and Jeff Hamilton, whose sounds he synthesizes into his historically-rooted modern jazz voice. He is also a lover of Balkan music and is an enthusiastic member of the international folk dancing community in the Boston area.

Outside of drumming, Julian is passionate about musicology and is a deep lover of classical music. He is a regular at Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts, and has authored papers on diverse topics such as the influence of the “Faust” legend in European concert music of the 19th and 20th centuries, the music of the contemporary Brazilian-American composer Felipe Lara, as well as technical analyses of selected movements from the Beethoven string quartets, and a movement from Olivier Messiaen’s kaleidoscopic orchestral work, Chronochromie.
