Get to know Katie Blake

Kathryn (Katie) Blake has studied viola for 13 years and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition with a Minor in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2021. At UMBC, she studied viola under Miss Lisa Steltenpohl, the principal violist of the Baltimore Symphony, and studied composition under Dr. Linda Dusman and Dr. Bradley Green.

Katie has had a prolific career as both a composer and violist during her college years, and continues to have an active musical life. Katie has had her compositions performed by many professional ensembles and musicians, including the Bergamot Quartet, percussionist Jonathan Sotelo, the Strata Trio, and Balance Campaign. Her work has been featured in the 2019 Fresh Inc. Festival, the Fall 2020 District New Music Coalition Conference, and by T1International during National Diabetes Awareness Month.

Katie has worked as both a violist and composer in interdisciplinary collaborations. On many occasions, she’s composed the music for film by fellow student animators, as well as composing and performing the music for choreographers. Her largest collaboration was with Sofie Ann Clemmensen on In To and Out Of, which was performed at The Kennedy Center’s THE REACH. For this collaboration, Katie both composed and performed the music for solo viola to accompany the dancers.

During her college years, Katie performed with the UMBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. E. Michale Richards and Mr. Jason Love, and was appointed principal violist from 2019-2021. Katie also performed in various chamber ensembles, performing Felix Mendellsohn’s String Quartet in D Major and Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, and also premiered both Donte Speaks, Jr.'s, String Quartet, in 2017 and Eliza Triolo’s string quartet, Suddenly Last Spring, in 2019.
