Get to know Lavern Antoine

LA VERN ANTOINE, a Los Angeles native, is a violinist and music instructor. She studied violin at Grace Scripps College under the late Israel Baker, most famous as a Hollywood studio orchestra concertmaster and for playing the screeching violin for the shower murder segment of the Alfred Hitchcock movie, “Psycho”. She later studied at Dick Grove School of Music and at California Institute of the Arts majoring in violin performance under Mark Menzies. Ms. Antoine starting working in the music business as DJ for KSPC radio in Claremont, California. She subsequently worked as an assistant at 20th Century Records, as an assistant engineer at the Dick Grove School of Music, at Warners Bros. Records as a Copyright and Licensing Coordinator, later changing departments to Black Radio Promotions, Publicity, A&R and Black Music Video Promotions and Production. She later became the manager/music librarian for the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra as well as the Music Librarian for the Santa Clarita Symphony. In 2005 La Vern developed a violin program at the Santa Clarita Valley Community Center in Newhall, which continues to this day. In 2009 she started a violin program at St. Odilia School in South Central Los Angeles initially for Academic Decathlon students to expose them to music and stringed instruments. She has also taught for Southeast Symphony's Conservatory of Music and for the Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF) schools under Fernando Pullum. Currently Ms. Antoine teaches privately and is the Head Music Librarian and Associate Concertmaster for Symphony 47 in Hollywood. As a violinist and/or contractor, she has recorded with many artists including, Eric Benet, George Clinton, Rhianna, Stevie J, Shelley Cohen, Tevin Campbell, Wyclef Jean, Jody Watley, Nightfire, Somethin' for the People, Edgar Redmond Project, Dean Sanz, Watts Ensemble (Avant Garde New Music Group) and music for the Stagecoach Museum in Thousand Oaks, CA. Group performances include, Benjamin Wright Orchestra, Ricky Minor Orchestra, Cypress Pops Orchestra, Symphony 47, Santa Clarita Symphony, Southeast Symphony, Woody Woods Jazz Ensemble, Watts Ensemble, African American Chamber Music Society, Traction Avenue Chamber Orchestra, gospel group “Nightfire”, M.A.F.L.A. Ensemble, Conejo Pops Orchestra, Inglewood Pops Orchestra, West Valley Symphony and Griffith Park Observatory Orchestra. She has played in videos for Barry White, El DeBarge, Rick James, Randy Travis, Miri Ben Ari, Seal, Terrence Howard, Sean “Puffy” Combs and Blackstreet. Ms. Antoine is the co-executive producer of a double CD of a live recording of George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars live at the Strand entitled “Funk em Again for the First Time”, in the process of re-releasing to include digital platforms.
