Get to know Luther Blackwell
Luther Blackwell received private training and secondary training at Berklee School of
Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, and the
University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.
Luther has performed with distinguished conductors such as the late and great Leonard
Bernstein of the New York Philharmonic, Seji Osawa of the Boston Symphony, Laurence
Gilgore Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Connecticut Grand Opera and
Orchestra, and Mr. Jessie Chapman Artistic, Director and Principal Conductor of the Westhill
Chamber Singers. He has toured with numerous groups in the United States and Europe.
Mr. Blackwell has an independent film and record company BSMF Films and LuNeIs Records.
Luther has written more than 400 songs plus musical scores for off-Broadway shows. Credits
include: "Generation X," "The Game," "Let's Go," "The Grinches that Stole Bridgeportville,"
and "Marginal Saints." "Marginal Saints" is a 2003 winner of the New York International
Fringe Festival and a feature-length movie filmed in 2005. In 2006, Luther with Bob Ramos
of Sports Talk in Black ‘n’ White and The Bottom Line completed a documentary on the
greatest football player of all time the legendary Jim Brown entitled “Jim Brown
UNPLUGGED”.
Having been very active for the last 40 years teaching the youth of Connecticut in both the
private and public sector he has served as a Music Instructor for the Bridgeport Public School
District, Regional Center for the Arts, Fairfield University, Norwalk Community College,
Norwalk Youth Symphony, Family and Children's Agency Inc., Giuliano's Music Center, Half
Mile Music Studios. Luther is also the former Artistic Director for Neighborhood Studios in
Bridgeport CT.
In addition to teaching, he has been instrumental in allowing youth to learn and
participate in the performing arts as co-founder of Shiloh Academy of the Creative Arts, Hall
Academy of the Fine Arts, and founder of Original Works, Inc. Original Works Inc. was
selected by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and Connecticut Commission on Children
for the Arts and After School Demonstration Initiative as one of three pilot sites.
Mr. Blackwell's unique talents as an educator, instrumentalist, conductor, vocal coach, composer, and arranger make him a sought-after musician. He has worked with the Bridgeport Board of
Education at Hallen and Roosevelt Elementary School for President Obama's Arts and
Humanities Turnaround Arts Initiative. Luther is the Executive Director and
Program Director of Blackwell's School of Music and Film and Original Works Inc. It's
501(c)(3) performing arts company which he teaches students from all around the world
Online. He is Music Director for New Hope Missionary Baptist Youth Singers. He is also
known as DJ LA Smooth where he is host of a Gospel Jazz Radio Show every Sunday from 8
p.m. till 10 p.m. on WJRG Connecticut #1 Gospel 24/7 Internet Radio Station.
