Get to know Mari Kilgus
Hey there, I’m Mari. I’m a native of Winston-Salem, NC and I’ve been passionate about music my whole life. In May 2020, I concluded my freshman year at Clemson University where I double majored in Computer Science and Psychology and minored in music. I will be transferring to NC State University in Fall 2021 with similar educational goals. I started playing piano at the age of 6 and have loved it ever since. I found my first flute teachers through a music store very similar to Music & Arts so I’m excited to be switching roles. I hope to inspire a love for music in my students the way my amazing teachers did for me. I began teaching piano and flute lessons in high school, where I learned the importance of catering to each student’s individual needs. I also served as section leader for my high school marching band flute section, where I listened extensively to players, held masterclasses, and gave private flute lessons. I excelled at flute competitively in middle school and high school, participating in highly regarded ensembles such as NC All-State Band, NC All-State Orchestra, and the NC Governor’s School Orchestra. I was accepted to the North Carolina School of the Arts my senior year of high school, but ultimately chose not to attend. I studied with excellent teachers over the years including Caroline Rohm, Cain-Oscar Bergeron, Bo Lee, Lea Kibler, and Erinn Frechette who encouraged me endlessly with their constructive criticism and praise, while continually fueling my love for music.
