Teaching Philosphy: I like to know what types of music my students are interested in and adapt lessons to suit their musical preferences and goals. I like to promote a deeper understanding of the guitar by using source material that students can easily relate to and get excited about. I also try to stress creativity and personal exploration of the instrument. Lastly, I like to teach students to read standard musical notation, but I also use guitar tablature and chord charts.

Get to know Matt Weiner

In the late 1980s, at the age of ten, I started taking jazz and classical guitar lessons and continued with lessons through my senior year of high school. While I was in high school I played more rock, ska, punk, and reggae than jazz or classical. I played in a ton of bands that played clubs, house parties, and even a college radio broadcast. It was a blast and playing college radio got me into recording. In my senior year of high school, I purchased a four-track Tascam Portastudio (tape recorder!) and a keyboard and became obsessed with recording music.

I ended up pursuing music recording professionally and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Audio Technology from American University in 2002 along with a minor in Music Theory. Music theory is one of my favorite subjects, by the way. And, throughout college, I studied classical guitar with Larry Snitzler, a student of Andres Segovia.

In 2003 I began working full-time as the Studio Manager for the American University Audio Technology program and as an Adjunct Lecturer in Audio Technology. I taught audio technology courses (Recording Techniques and Pro Tools Certification) for over a decade at American University. During that time of my life, I was involved in music projects on a daily basis: recording, mixing, playing guitar bass, drums, and piano as an in-house studio musician, and writing original music.

I currently work full-time as an engineer at a design firm specializing in architectural acoustics.

I love guitar and find the process of teaching it fascinating and extremely rewarding. Not only is it fun, but I find that I discover all sorts of interesting things about people and guitar that I might never realize without teaching people how to play the guitar.
