I have started taking piano lesson at the age of 5. Until the age of 17, I took 3 lessons a week. I grew up in a communistic regime in the former Czechoslovakia and even though the regime ended soon after I turned 6, the rigid approach to teaching music prevailed for many years after. This rigid structure almost made me hate playing piano, and when my severe medical condition prevented me from graduating in music arts at the age of 17, I was somewhat relived. I didn't play piano almost at all for the next 5 years, way into my college years. Since then, it started to slowly creep back in until it once more became part of my daily routine. This time, it was only pure joy whenever I sat behind the piano. I knew that when I teach my children or anybody else to play, it will be a whole different experience than I had as a child. It will be fun, adventurous and inspirational. Just as music should be!
