Performance Experience: Richard has performed in various ensembles ranging from Wind Ensembles, Jazz “Lab Bands”, Trombone Choirs, Tuba-Euphonium Quartets, and more. As Principle Euphonium for the UNC Wind Ensemble, Richard toured the state several times and has performed at the Colorado Music Educators Association conference as a featured soloist. After being named a finalist in the Rocky Mountain Concerto Competition in 2017, Richard began performing at The Candlelight- playing multiple instuments in several musicals
Teaching Experience: After graduating with a degree in Music Education from UNC, Richard taught Band and Choir for several years in Wiggins, CO. Between private lessons, sectionals, and the classroom, he has a plethora of diverse experience working with all levels of students in a variety of settings. These students have participated in many honor bands, including CSU Honor Band, CU Honor Band, and Colorado All-State Band.
Teaching Philosophy: Richard believes in self-reflection and delivering consistent feedback to reach specific and realistic goals. Breaking down these goals into clear and actionable steps allows students to take ownership of their learning. By teaching students how to set and achieve goals, this empowers students to carry these skills into every other aspect of their lives.

Richard Shaw is a Music Educator and Trombonist who also serves as the Music Coordinator for The Candlelight in Johnstown, CO. When not working, Richard enjoys losing golf balls on the golf course and spending far too much money at new coffee shops.
